How
is FLEC different from other tutoring centers?
Other
tutoring centers offer academic tutoring. They help students who
need additional instruction in a particular school subject; such as,
science or math. For many students, tutoring alone does not bring
significant improvement in academic performance. FLEC uses
procedures that address the underlying
causes of learning difficulty: processing speed, or phonemic awareness,
for example. A deficiency in memory, attention, logic and
reasoning, or auditory processing skills will effect many areas of a
student's learning. Strengthening those skills cause improvement
across the board in that student's life.
What
are cognitive skills?
Cognitive
skills are simply the mental
abilities needed to process information and to learn. They
include attention, ability to reason, visual and auditory memory,
comprehension, visualization and verbalization skills, auditory
processing, and processing speed.
How
can I tell if my child has weak
cognitive skills?
A
child with weak cognitive skills might
display any number of these symptoms:
- inability to
sit still, easy distracted
- difficulty
reading, spelling, or sounding
out words
- not able to
automatically recall math
facts
- poor short
term memory
- difficulty
staying on task or completing
tasks
- needs
instructions repeated
- difficulty
following spoken instruction
- poor
comprehension
- makes
frequent errors
- avoids work
or school assignments
- is
disorganized and frustrated
- reverses
words or letters
- disruptive
behavior, impulsivity
- daydreaming
I
think my child need FLEC's services? How do I get started?
Most
of the time, our services begin with a free phone consultation to help
us understand the student's issues and allows parents to ask
questions. If it is appropriate, we will schedule an evaluation
to
determine if there are correctable learning
deficiencies. We evaluate for:
- visual
and
auditory memory
- processing
speed
- working
memory
- attention
- visual
processing
- auditory
processing
- phonemic
awareness
- visual-spatial
skills
- fine
and gross
motor skills
- visual
efficiency
skills
- reading
and math
assessment
The
evaluation takes approximately 2 hours. At the end of the
evaluation, we will discuss our observations with the parent and
schedule a consultation. At the consultation, we provide a
written
report detaling the results and our recommendations for
treatment.
Generally, a student can begin therapy within one week of the
consultation.
In our
evaluation, we may determine that students need the services of
other professionals, such as occupational therapists, speech
pathologists, developmental optometrists, counselors, and
nutritionists, some of which are on site.
How long will
my
child be in your program?
Our
goal is to have students leave
us as comfortable, independent learners. We don't want them to
have to
come back for more help, or to require extra help at school. That
being said, each student will progress at a different rate.
My child has special needs and
is in a special class at school--can FLEC help?
Absolutely!
Many of our students come to us with an IEP or a formal diagnosis of a
learning difficulty. Our hope is that when your student finishes
with us, s/he will have
only one year in resource before transitioning back into
the classroom.
